A Complete Guide For Parents To Choose The Best Toys For Their Children

By Eugen Lisov Do you remember how it was when you where a child? What was your main activity? Was it working? Of course not. Your main activity was playing. You had no concerns. You needed toys and your parents where supposed to provide you with them. They had to find toys you wouldnt throw away and believe me, it wasnt easy for them. Now you are a parent and you are in the same situation as your parents years ago. Youre looking for toys that your child will like. Thats why you must know how to choose the right toys. My parents made one common mistake: they would buy me toys that they considered wonderful. But usually, when they would give me the toy, I would either consider it too girlish or too boring. It wasnt fun for them to see how a toy they bought for me to play with would stay forgotten in my closet. How to find out whats the right toy for your child? Just watch your child closely to determine his preferred activities, skills level, preferred band(s) and movie(s), and so on. Based on these observations you can get a clue on what types of toys your child would prefer. For instance, if your child loves the movie Lord of the Rings, I bet that hell also like Lord of the Rings toys Now dont just go into the first toy shop and buy the first Lord of the Rings toy you find. Observations arent enough. There are some other very important factors you must consider. Adding them into the equation helps ensure you that your child will have lots of fun with the toy youll choose to buy for him. Here are the factors you must consider when choosing toys for your child: Childs age This is very important. If you buy toys too advanced for your childs age, chances are that he might get injured. Toy manufacturers struggle to make their products as safe as possible, but if you dont follow their recommendations, your child may suffer. On the other hand, if you buy toys made for children with age under that of your child, he will consider them too boring. The best thing is to choose toys designed precisely for your childs age. Here are two articles that will help you choose toys for babies and toys for toddlers. Childs gender This is exactly what I said above that my parents bought me toys that I considered to be girlish. Im a boy, but the same is with girls too. Any detail that may make the toy look as for the other gender than that of your child will make the toy undesired. Toys your childs friends play with When your child is playing with his friends, watch to find out if he manifests interest in any of his playmates toys. If he does, then its very likely that he would like to have a toy similar the one his friend has. Sometimes, a child tells his parents what toy he likes or wants, thus saving them from a lot of hard work. But dont count on this. Some children arent very keen to talk with parents unless they really want a certain toy. Safety This is the most important factor you must consider whenever you need to decide what toy you should buy for your child. Unfortunately, this is also the most overlooked one. Usually, parents forget to check if the toy they choose for their children are safe. Is the toy educational? Its a good thing if the toys you choose for your child can help him develop new skills. And please remember that the age difference between you and your child is of at least 20 years. The fact that you liked a toy when you were a child does not mean that your child will love it too. Children from different generations like different types of toys Make sure you offer the toy to your child in the appropriate manner! When you offer the toy to your child, dont do it in a Heres your toy. Now go and play with it manner. If you do it this way, that toy wont mean a thing to your child. Rather, try to make a game. Hide the toy somewhere where the child can easily find it, and encourage him to look for it. Laugh with your child, search for it together And when the he finds the toy, dont just let him play by himself. Get involved in your childs play. Make that the fun of a lifetime. A parent is a childs first and best friend. Eugen Lisov is the creator of Child-Toys-Guide.com, a site focused on helping parents worldwide to choose the best toys for their children. If you offer your child a bad toy, its the same as if you dont offer your youngster any toy. Please feel free to browse my site; it will only help you when choosing toys for your child. Coaxing Fresh Vegetables From The Garden All Winter Long

By Kenneth Point Autumn typically signals the end of home grown vegetables from the garden, but with a little ingenuity you can harvest garden fresh produce well into the winter months. My Central Pennsylvania garden continues to supply fresh vegetables during the fall and winter when most gardeners in my growing region are content to dream about next summers bounty. Read on to discover simple tricks that will fortify your garden against the onslaught of frigid weather. Fall often delivers brief cold spells with a few days of frost filled mornings, sandwiched between weeks of milder, frost-free weather. The problem is that a single touch of frost can wipe out every tender annual growing in the garden. Fortunately, a little protection will enable frost sensitive vegetables and herbs to survive a cold snap, and reward the resourceful gardener with an opportunity to enjoy extended harvests. Something as simple as the transparent, fleecy, floating row covers used to shield plants from harmful insects can also prevent frost damage. Row covers trap the warmth that radiates up from the earth much like the way that a cloud cover holds temperatures and prevents frost from forming. Row covers offer a few degrees of protection, keeping tender annuals safe from light frost. Use the thicker grade covers for maximum benefit. Late summer is the ideal time to sow cold tolerant vegetables that will flourish in the fall and endure cold weather without complaint. Examples of hardy vegetables for fall gardening include: kale, spinach, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, Brussels Sprouts, kohlrabi, turnips, cabbages, carrots, oriental greens, rutabagas, leeks, and winter lettuces. Once freezing conditions arrive, even cold hardy crops will appreciate some protection if they remain in the garden. Cardboard boxes and fruit baskets can provide shelter to individual plants, while old sheets, blankets, and heavy plastic tarps will protect entire rows or beds of plants. Apply the coverings in the evening when freezes are forecast and remove them the following morning after the sun warms the air. Another effective solution is to use a commercial variety of cloche, or to set up a portable cold frame over the garden bed. Cloches include the heavy glass, bell shaped jars, or variously styled and shaped rigid plastic devices. One style of cold frame consists of a tubular frame covered by a woven poly material with flaps for venting. You can also obtain sturdier cold frames made with aluminum framing and twin wall polycarbonate panels that lift up for venting. Regardless of the type of protection used to cover your plants you must remove it or provide venting during the day as temperatures rise. Resourceful gardeners can combine a few discarded window sashes and bales of straw to create a simple makeshift cold frame. Just arrange the straw bales into a rectangular shape around a garden bed and lay the windows across the top to form an enclosed and insulated growing area. This setup will work great to keep a bed of leafy greens growing further into the winter. Oddly enough, water can protect and insulate plants from the cold. Commercial orchards actually spray water and mist onto their trees to prevent frost damage. In the home garden you can employ plastic gallon jugs filled with water to provide protection. Place the containers around plants, under floating row covers or tarps, and inside of your cold frames. The water will absorb and store heat during the day and release it at night to provide warmth for your plants. Youll get the best results by painting the jugs black so that theyll absorb more energy from the sun during the day. Incredibly, even if the water in the container freezes, it will continue to release a significant amount of heat energy into the surrounding area. Root cellars were once commonly used to store fruits and vegetables over the winter. These dark, underground storage areas with earth floors were designed to keep fresh produce in a state of hibernation. Crops such as potatoes, apples, rutabagas, turnips, beets, parsnips, and carrots would be stacked in baskets or crates. While cabbages, celery, endive, Chinese cabbage, kohlrabi, and leeks were lifted from the garden with their roots attached and placed upright, side by side, on the floor of the root cellar. Its amazing how the uprooted plants can maintain their quality and appearance for months with no sunlight, water, or nutrients, while standing on the cold, earth floor of the root cellar. Root cellars arent high on the list of options for home builders any more, but you can recreate the conditions using crawl spaces or unheated storage areas. Barrels or large containers sunk into the ground at an angle and insulated with straw and earth can also serve as improvised root cellars for storing fresh produce. Certain vegetables will survive on their own in the garden through bitterly cold conditions. Leeks, kale, and collards frequently withstand harsh winters without any protection. Fall planted garlic and shallots will develop strong root systems in the fall, spend the winter underground, and then spring up at the earliest signs of the arrival of spring. Many root crops including beets, carrots, turnips, rutabagas, and parsnips can be left in the garden protected with a thick layer of shredded leaves or straw. You can then continue harvesting as needed, provided that the ground doesnt freeze and prevent digging. Finish harvesting before spring arrives though, since quality will degrade once the roots resume growing and switch into seed production mode. With proper planning and a little extra care you can easily grow and harvest vegetables beyond the normal spring and summer seasons. Simply implement a few of the ideas presented in this article and youll soon enjoy your own home grown, fresh produce much longer than usual, possibly even year-round. Sugar Substitutes: Licorice Root

By Denice Moffat Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)-Licorice root (the ingredient in black licorice) is a substance of which virtually everyone is aware. Licorice is a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean region. Oriental cultures recognize licorice for its sweetening properties. Glycyrrhizin, the active ingredient in licorice, is between 50 to 100 times sweeter than sucrose. Parts of Licorice Used: You can use the whole root (with skin or peeled), the dried powder, or the extract to naturally sweeten the things you eat and drink. It takes very little to attain sweetness. Many over-the-counter combination herbal teas sweeten and flavor their formulas with licorice. The blue-flowering plant, which looks like a pea vine, grows wild in much of southern Europe and in Asia. Licorice is one of the most widely used medicinal herbs and is found in numerous traditional formulas in many cultures because it also covers up the gross taste of other herbs. Uses of Licorice root: Licorice root has been used since ancient Egyptian times to treat upset stomachs, ulcers, asthma, chest infections, bronchitis and coughs. It is also good for clearing the throat, supporting adrenal function, arthritis and as is a mild laxative. Licorice root roots and stolons (peeled or unpeeled) may be used in its unadulterated, ground-up form as a primary sweetening compound. Licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid (also knows as glycyrrhizic or glycyrrhizin. Glycyrrhizic acid is often touted as an ulcer-healing agent (although my clients hated it, so I no longer send it home with them. I also don’t ask them to chew the tablets.) In one clinical study, licorice root fluid extract was used to treat 100 patients with early peptic ulcer. Eighty six cases that had been unresponsive to conventional treatment were treated at a dose of 15 ml (about one tablespoon extract) four times daily for six weeks. Positive effects were reported in 90% of the cases. Licorice overdose: The bad thing about licorice is that it causes sodium retention which then raises blood pressure causing hypertension. Licorice acts to retain water in the body. Because of this, it can be a good herb for diabetes insipidus patients where the person can’t seem to drink enough water. Other side effects include edema, headaches, lethargy, and mild depletion of potassium which may result in cardiac problems when consumed excessively. Adverse symptoms of excessive glycyrrhizin consumption generally disappear shortly after a person lowers their dietary intake of products containing the sweetener. Contraindications: Licorice root should not be used for people or pets suffering with cholestatic liver disorders, liver cirrhosis, hypertonia, hypokalemia, severe kidney insufficiency. It should not be used in women who are pregnant as it can cause an increase in blood pressure, but it is OK to use during lactation. Case Study: I had just learned how great licorice root was for ulcers from one of the herb distribution companies when I first started practicing natural medicine, so I ordered a couple bottles of the deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) which is supposed to have fewer side effects if overdose occurs. Within a week, I had two ulcer cases that week, which is usually the synchronistic way things happen in my life. I didnt hear back from the first client, but the second client brought her bottle back to me, almost completely full. Have you ever tried these? She asked. Well, no, I dont have ulcers, but I do try anything I send home with cats as they wont tolerate much and you have to be particular with what you sent home with them. Well, you are going to try one now. She said assertively as she opened the bottle and whipped out one of those stinky little pills. I popped one into my mouth and chewed. Woof! I said, as I made a dash to the sink to wash my mouth out. I had NO idea! I refunded her money and learned a lot from that woman. I guess you have to use licorice root in very small doses! Im not so keen on sending home awful tasting stuff with clients any more. Id rather send capsules and homeopathic formulas home which taste better. Some herbalists say capsules dont work as well, but if you cant gag something down, and it stays on your shelf the entire month, its not going to do you any good at all for correcting the challenge you came to see me for in the first place! I think Ill just stick to eating the occasional piece of black licorice candy! I like the organic Panda brand you get at the local health food store. Heres an interesting licorice fact: Millions of pounds of licorice are imported into the United States each year, about 90% for use in flavoring tobacco products. Bizarre, huh? I wonder if smoking it causes high blood pressure. . . Tanning Bed Options and Hints

By George Anderson Having tanned and nice looking skin is becoming more and more important in our society. We often have to use tanning beds in order to get our skin to the desired color. There are a few things that should be done to get the best tan, and the very first one is a good moisturizing lotion. Try to go for high quality moisturizers and tanning lotions not only do they provide a nicer and longer lasting tan but their actions on your skin are also more delicate. Tan extender lotions should also be in your bag when you are using a tanning bed. The main role of this lotion is to keep the tan intensity constant between exposures to the artificial light. Sometimes, if you are not using the moisturizer and extender, you might lose half of the potential tan. However, do not use the same outdoor tanning oils when you are tanning indoors. Because of the differences between natural sunlight and artificial tanning light, the outdoor oils might actually prevent you from getting a good and uniform tan. Being constant about your indoor tanning sessions is important, as skipping a few will put a hold on the process. Your tan develops in time and is a gradual process, and repeated exposure to ultra violet (UV) lights is the only way to keep it going. If you just skipped a session or two, chances are you can go back to your regular tanning schedule without any worries. If you took a longer break, make sure to consult with the manual of your tanning bed and see if you need to start over. You also need to be very careful when planning your initial tanning session, as one exposure time might be just fine for one skin type and disastrous for another. If you are a fair skinned person, try to find a program that will target pigmentation more precisely, without risking burns, of course. Getting to know your skin type is important there are 5 categories, starting from 1 (albino extremely white skin) and going all the way to 5, with highly pigmented skin. Consult your tanning bed manual for exposure times for each skin type, or ask the attendant at the sunning parlor to create a safe and efficient schedule for your particular skin type. Many people wish to eliminate trips to the tanning facility and get their own tanning bed. You may choose the vertical or horizontal tanners. The horizontal ones, also known as capsules, are the classic tanning beds and they are more relaxing than the vertical ones. However, vertical tanning beds do have some strong points, such as a better all-round tan and no pressure points that you get in horizontal tanning beds. Before purchasing the tanning bed you should check the space it requires to be installed and what the electrical specifications are. Models that use more tanning lamps will also eat a lot more electricity on the other hand they are the ones producing the fastest tan. Although the initial cost of the tanning bed will be higher, you might still consider this investment a good one, especially if you are a frequent tanner. George Anderson knows the right way to use both commercial and home tanning beds. Tips for Choosing the Right Wedding

By Sher Matsen The job of choosing the right wedding cake style is the responsibility of both the future bride and groom. The style of cake youll choose will largely depend on the wedding theme and the size of the wedding. Youll want to be sure your cake is large enough for all attending guests to receive a piece. If youre having a super large wedding you can always have two cakes. In fact, a new trend is for there to be a bride cake and a grooms cake. It can actually be quite a fun event where you can let a little bit of creativity flow. The solution to a “no stress” cake selection is simply knowing what you need and doing your research before hand. The information below will assist you in making sure you’ve got your icing covered! The wedding cake is usually cut into small slices, packaged and tied with a ribbon for your guests to take home. You can also serve your cake for dessert. A cake large enough to serve all your guests may cost more but by the same token you eliminate the cost of dessert from your catering budget. Choose a cake that you both enjoy. The size of the cake is directly related to the size of your wedding and your budget.. If your budget for your wedding is low or you just do not wish to pay very much for your cake. If your budget is small, check around with friends and family there may be someone who has the expertise to do your wedding cake for a fraction of the cost. Friends, family, magazines, your local bakery, and the internet are all great places to get ideas about the types of cakes available. Or go crazy and get the cake youve always dreamed of having. Types of Wedding Cakes There are many types of wedding cakes you can choose for your wedding depending on your budget and size of your wedding. Here are just a choices Small or large round cake Small or large sheet cake Single level wedding cake Multi level wedding cake Themed wedding cake for example for a beach wedding you might tie seashells into your cake, or have a sandy textured icing. Fresh flowers on your wedding cake Icing flowers on your wedding cake Silk flowers on your wedding cake Match your cake with the colors of your wedding theme the colors of the flowers or the color of your bridesmaid dresses are popular choices Traditional wedding cake is fruit cake with white icing sponge cake or carrot cake. To be able to keep the top layer of the cake it must be a fruit cake. Order your wedding cake 6 months to a year in advance. The month you are getting married in is important because the type of cake you choose may not work well with the season. For example, mouse in wedding cakes does not work well during the hot month of August. Winter wedding cakes have fewer restrictions. Questions to ask your Bakery and or Baker 1) Are samples available to try before you buy? Just because a cake looks good doesnt mean it will taste good, or not be as hard as a rock. Best to taste test so youre not disappointed.. 2) When is the last day I can make changes? By finding out when the last day you can make changes is, you will most likely be getting the answer as to when they will be starting your cake.. 3) Do you deliver? Cakes do not ship well, so unless youve made arrangements for someone to pick your cake up and bring it to the reception, it is best if the bakery can deliver it. 4) How do you ship your wedding cakes? 80% of wedding cake damage occurs during shipping. Shipping is also your friend picking it up in their car. The cake needs to be packed properly to ensure it arrives at the reception intact. 5) Should something go wrong what is your back up plan? Many will say that they either have no plans or that nothing will go wrong. Not a good enough answer. When its the day before your wedding and something goes wrong its too late to come up with a backup plan. 6) How much would it be for regular cakes the same size as the wedding cake? This will determine if you are being gouged or not. As with all elements of your wedding planning and preparation are important. Decide the type of cake, get pricing, and order early. Then you can place another nice big fat checkmark on your to do list. Home Remedies: Abrasions, Abscesses and Anemia

By Michael Russell Abrasions: Abrasions are caused by slight scraping, cutting or rubbing of the skin, resulting in it being grazed or broken. Cinnamon was traditionally used as a natural antiseptic and clove oil was used to disinfect the wound. Honey was spread on the wound also as an antiseptic and helped to speed up the healing process. Tea was also used externally to check bleeding and to fight against bacteria. Other common remedies were crushed marigold flowers that are then applied externally; crushed Parsley leaves; crushed fresh plantain leaves; onion juice that is applied externally; dock leaves, applied either directly or as a lotion; tea made from sage applied externally; bruised geranium leaves; and pounded root or leaves of comfrey made into a poultice. While bathing, witch hazel and lavender made into compresses or poultices were used. Yarrow, meadowsweet and elderflowers were also utilized. Later on, iodine was used on abrasions and cuts more frequently. Other remedies were a little more unusual. One of these included putting fresh elderflowers in equal amounts of lard which was then heated gently until the flowers were crisp. The mixture was then strained through a piece of linen to form a kind of ointment. Lard and white horehound is also used to make a similar ointment. Abscesses: An Abscess is any accumulation of pus. This usually occurs in a body cavity and often causes swelling and inflammation. There are a lot of traditional cures for abscesses and some are stranger than others. Using a hot poultice made from bread and milk is commonly used (also used for boils) because it brings the abscess to a head. Some use a beaten egg with three tablespoonfuls of white flour which is cooked slowly and carefully formed into a white paste. This paste is then spread on a piece of cloth or gauze and placed on the affected area. This application is repeated every three hours. Various herbs, either combined or used separately, are also turned into a poultice to remedy abscesses. These include comfrey, marshmallow root, chickweed, slippery elm and plantain. Certain vegetables were also used for abscesses and boils. Hot poultices made of raw carrots or crushed boiled turnips are used. A paste of mashed and cooked are spread on a piece of cloth ad applied on the abscess or boil. Eucalyptus oil and onion juice are also applied externally. On the stranger side, one traditional remedy involves taking a small quantity of snails and boiling them in ground salt. The paste that is formed is then applied to the abscess or boil. Anemia: Anemia is unofficially known as low blood count or bloodlessness. This is a condition wherein there is an inadequacy of red blood cells, the cells that contain hemoglobin, circulating in the body. This is caused either by a slow production of red blood cells or prolonged loss of blood. Traditional cures of anemia include dandelion tea and nettle tea which is rich in iron and is often sweetened with honey. An infusion of herbs could be taken also as an alternative. These herbs include alfalfa, dandelion root, rose-hip, centaury, yellow dock and watercress. Yellow dock is very rich in iron. Watercress is also abundant in iron and is considered a good cure for anemia and so are cabbages, carrots apples and onions. Ancient cures for this condition also consist of comfrey, angelica, fenugreek, fumitory, barberry and St. John’s wort. Michael Russell Your Independent Herbal guide. The WAP browser ensures that the web is just a click of a button away, while presence of 3G ensures that data downloads happen at a rapid rate of 384kbps After all these mind blowing features one can be forgiven for thinking that the calling facility is incidental in this Nokia device, but you stand corrected as this device is not only primarily a communicating device, it changes the whole paradigm of mobile communication. 3G technology makes video calling possible and allows you to have that candid conversation by looking into the eyes of that special someone. The high entertainment quotient of this handset is maintained by the presence of the amazing media and music player and the huge expandable memory of upto 2GB makes sure that all the songs that you ever hummed fondly are on your fingertips, quite literally! But with great features come great liabilities, so after integrating all these 21st century gizmos the N93 ends up on being the heavier side in all possible manners. It weighs 180 grams and costs a lot more than this! So the only plausible way for owning a [http://www.ukonlinemarket.co.uk/mobile/Phone_Deal.asp?Ph=Nokia--N93]Nokia n93 is by going for a Contract mobile phone. Captive Audience Principle

By Adom Canaccord Girls don’t like it when you are annoying. They also don’t like it when you are pushy needy or to easy or too friendly or too excited with them. That translates to lack of control in their minds. However, often times, those are the same behaviors that increase excitement and good feelings in girls when you do it right. In other words, it makes them feel good, it makes them like you and at the same time it makes them not like the way you do it and makes them leave you. The way to have the benefits of those behaviors and not have the girl leave is to use the principle of captive audience. See, people all the time do things that they don’t really like, that makes them want to stop originally, but that they still do by putting themselves in a situation where they don’t have a choice. Girls do the same thing. They put themselves in a situation where they don’t have a choice, but to listen to lame pick up lines, to have to watch your moves and flirting etc, that they say they are not interested in. The truth is that is a girl makes herself captive and you don’t do those behaviors, she will not make herself captive again. But if you do it right, she might complain and wine about it during the time, but will put herself truth that again. The way the principle of captive audience works is that there is a warm up and a cool down. Most guys make the mistake of giving their spiel as soon as they get the chance and without really having the control of the girls exit, thus encouraging her to leave. The way the principle of captive audience works is that you wait for the girl to make herself captive on her own terms. Then you wait a little bit longer to worm up to take her to the climax, about five percent of the duration. Then before the duration is over, you cool down and take it easy for the remaining five percent. What that does is it shows to the girl that you have self control and will not abuse her when she is captive, but you are only doing it to show her what she is missing that she otherwise would never do on her own. So basically there is three steps. There must be a captive situation where there is no exit. You are taking a cab together, you in a classroom together, you are working together etc. There is a period of time where there is no exit for that period of time. Then there is the worm up. You don’t bug as soon as you get a chance to talk to her because that will shock and freak her out. You might still jostle and shake her up a little bit during the middle of your conversation, but at least you have reassured her by showing self control with a slow worm up and you will again show self control with a cool down. So yes, there is a way to tell a girl all your funny jokes, your funny faces and comical remarks that might be too over the line if you do it right away and when the girl is not captive. If the girl is not captive, doing it is counter productive because it might discourage her and she will automatically assume that you want to discourage her on purpose because you don’t like her. If she thought you did like her she would expect you to take some control over her first. Captive audience situations happen all the time. They happen pretty much every time you are in a place where women are present. They just vary in type and magnitude making them hard to identify and thus you might think that they are not there, but they are. Taking the elevator together. Having a friend give you two a ride. Sitting together during a classroom. Working in the same office together. Having lunch at the same place together. In order for the captive audience principle to work, it must be not you who’s making the audience captive, it must the type of situation of which the person is aware of, knowing hot it works and allows themselves to be willingly involved. There must be a line which you do not cross when you lay on the charm. Having dinner together has not as much control as hanging out with friends because with friends there is more peer pressure making the girl confirm. So you would lay on the charm heavier when you are with friends than when out for coffee one on one because it’s easier for her to make some lame excuse and leave. She knows that she has the choice to leave. The harder it is for her to leave the more attractive you look when you come on with the jokes and corny lines. That’s pretty much all there’s to it. Identify a captive situation. Worm up. Deliver the punch line that is within the border line. And cool down. On their own these corny behaviors come across as needy and insecure, but done correctly will actually increase interest level.
